Many of Brisbane’s suburbs will clamour for your attention, but none more brazenly than Fortitude Valley to the north of the CBD. Once Brisbane’s premier commercial and retail hub – with some grand old buildings to match – it has been reborn as a cosmopolitan precinct of cool bars, funky eateries, pounding clubs, sweaty music venues and residential apartments. Street action radiates around the pavement cafés in Brunswick Street Mall, though new bars have begun surfacing in some of the surrounding blocks. Either way, the precinct pumps it up at weekends when the bohemian and fashionable let their well-coiffeured hair down.

Family (MacLachlan Street) claims a 33,000-watt sound system and runs at weekends; the Press Club on Brunswick Street sees itself as cooler; on Ann Street The Zoo is the live band venue; and the Wickham Hotel is the gay HQ, although many other venues cater to the market.

Chinatown Mall in Duncan Street provides a range of Asian gastronomical possibilities including Thai, Malaysian, Korean and Japanese…but not so much Chinese. Excellent Chinese restaurants do operate within Chinatown but, in general, Chinese restaurateurs and shopkeepers have gravitated to Sunnybank, a well-to-do fringe suburb with a large expatriate Chinese community.
